  1. nebula: A cloud of gas or dust in a
  2. galaxy which can be detected optically.
  3. Opaque clouds of dust that obscure
  4. light from distant objects are called
  5. dark nebulae, while those that reflect
  6. light are called reflection nebulae.
  7. Two types of gaseous nebulae are: 
  8.  emission nebulae: These nebulae
  9. glow from the radiation of hot stars
  10. inside them. Because the stars are
  11. usually quite young, emission
  12. nebulae are often thought to be
  13. stellar nurseries. Many emission
  14. nebulae are characterized by a reddish
  15. color caused by the presence of
  16. ionized hydrogen gas.
